Long may it be ignored

Our Opinion: Capsule comments | www.tucsoncitizen.com ®: "But it's not clear what the Legislature thinks it can accomplish by ordering that a flag be displayed in every public school classroom in the state.
Supporters see this as a way to instill patriotism. However, students aren't that shallow. It takes a lot more than having a flag waved in front of them to make them proud of our country."

This, and the Pledge of Allegiance (post 1954 version) being considered as a forcible requirement by various legislatures, are the most certain way to remove any meaning from the actions. Personally raised as Roman Catholic, I know how repetition leads to losing the meaning. Before getting to high school, those who are forced to repeat these things, such as the Ave Maria(Hail Mary) and Pater Noster (the completely misunderstood Lord's Prayer) become even less meaningful than a Zen Koan. It became, and still becomes, nothing more than a quick 'disclaimer' similar to what you will hear or read in commercials. Being able to recite the prayer or pledge becomes a challenge to do in the shortest amount of time.
